Anna Jay (with Harley Cameron) vs. Megan Bayne (with Penelope Ford)
We got things started on Saturday night with the Megasus making her way to the ring, accompanied by Ford, followed by Jay and Cameron. Bayne immediately hoisted Jay onto her shoulder and slammed her repeatedly into the corner, followed by a big chop and an Irish whip that nearly turned into a power slam. Jay escaped, though, and took Bayne down to her knees for just a moment.
Bayne overpowered Jay just moments later, and with the official distracted as Bayne talked trash to Cameron, Ford landed a moonsault off the apron onto Jay on the outside. Bayne slammed Jay into the ringside barricade, then slammed her again back first onto the apron and rolled her into the ring for a cover and a two-count. Bayne squeezed the air out of Jay’s lungs with a bear hug then threw her overhead and sent her crashing to the mat.
Jay dodged an attempted splash by Bayne on the apron and hit a jawbreaker, a few elbows, and a backstabber for a nice flurry of offense. Bayne snatched Jay up and positioned her for Fate’s Acsent, but Jay struggled off of Bayne’s shoulders to the apron and low-bridged a charging Megasus. Back in the ring, Jay hit a blockbuster on Bayne, but Bayne recovered with a bone-jarring Falcon Arrow.
Another attempted Fate’s Descent got turned into a DDT by Jay onto Bayne, with the smaller woman subsequently jumping onto Bayne’s back to lock in a sleeper hold. With the official’s back turned, Ford removed one of the top turnbuckle covers. Cameron, however, was quick to pull Ford out of the ring and brawl to the back.
Jay avoided running headlong into the exposed steel, instead sending Bayne into the unforgiving metal before cinching in a Queen Slayer sleeperhold. Bayne reversed by sending Jay back-first into the turnbuckle, then slammed Jay to the ground for a powerbomb, lifted her up, and hit Fate’s Descent for the win.
Nigel McGuinness Addresses FTR
McGuinness has had an epiphany. If he doesn’t get in the ring with Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, this is never going to end. So as far as he’s concerned, they’ll have their match at Double or Nothing, as he’ll team with Daniel Garcia.
AR Fox vs. Kyle Fletcher
Fox made a simple mistake as the bell rang in this one. His head was turned ever so slightly, and Fletcher came charging in to kick Fox’s head off in the opening second. That put Fox on the defensive, with Fletcher backing him into the corner for a couple of giant chops. An Irish whip into the corner gave Fox an opportunity to go over the top rope and recover, using his quickness to land a kick of his own square on Fletcher’s chin.
Fox showed off a little with repeated springboards between the middle and top rope, culminating in a bulldog on Fletcher. The Don Callis Family member rolled to the outside, caught his breath, then caught Fox in midair back in the ring and slammed him right down in the middle of the ring.
Fletcher looked to leverage his advantage with a potential superplex, but Fox blocked the attempt and rocked Fletcher with an incredibly athletic strike when coming off of the ropes, followed by a kick to a seated Fletcher on the top turnbuckle and a cutter on the AEW logo. The incredible offense continued with a flipping leap over the top rope into a double-stomp onto a prone Fletcher on the apron and another dive to the floor right after.
Fox threw Fletcher back into the ring and went for a 450, but Fletcher dodged and planted Fox with a Michinoku Driver for a two-count – but not three. Fletcher smashed Fox with a boot to the mouth in the corner and kept the kicks coming. With Fox reeling, Fletcher hit a stalling brainbuster and got the pinfall.
ROH World Champion Bandido, Tomohiro Ishii and Brody King vs. The Don Callis Family’s Lance Archer and RPG Vice (Trent Beretta and Rocky Romero)
Ishii and Romero were the first two men in the ring, with Trent wasting no time in ambushing Ishii from behind. The Stone Pitbull fought off both men and tagged in the big man, Brody King, with Archer stepping up and escalating the chaos, as all six men went back and forth with hammering blows, massive suplexes, and all the violence you would have expected.
Ishii had a chance to take out both Beretta and Romero in the ring with a double clothesline, but the two men ducked out of the way and gave Archer the chance to level Ishii. But it was Bandido to the rescue, setting up Romero for a Canadian Destroyer and then a lifting cutter that separated the RPG Vice member from his team, leaving him to the devices of King, Ishii and Bandido, capped by a big cannonball from Brody into the corner for the win.
King scored the win, but the Don Callis Family wasn’t through. They laid waste to their opponents after the bell, at least until the Outrunners ran out to make the save and chase off the Family.
Grizzled Young Veterans Confront Paragon
GYV once again stepped to Adam Cole, Roderick Strong and Kyle O’Reilly, letting the trio know how soft they think they are, with all their jokes and ha-ha. Cole had a simple response: If Grizzled Young Veterans want to prove they’re one of the top tag teams in AEW, the pressure is immense. And he knows how they can step up and take that test.
Speedball Mike Bailey vs. Blake Christian (with Lee Johnson)
Christian showed his cockiness at the opening bell, acting as if Bailey was beneath him. Speedball responded by trying to kick the smirk off of Christian’s face. Once the two came to blows, both got their licks in, as the match went from 0 to 60 in mere moments.
Yet with all the high-flying and innovative offense, the two men were here to fight, exchanging dozens of chops in the middle of the ring – only for Christian to take the low road and stomp on Bailey’s exposed toes. Speedball responded with a crane kick to the face of Christian, another kick with Christian stunned on the ring apron, then a top-rope moonsault to the outside.
Speedball rolled Christian into the ring, and that’s when Johnson made his presence known, distracting Bailey long enough for Christian to dive to the outside and take out Speedball. Bailey recovered, leading to a top-rope Frankensteiner and a spin-heel kick that put Christian down for the three count.
After the match, Speedball called out AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada, and the coin dropped. Okada’s brief appearance served as more of a diversion than anything, with Rush and Dralistico attacking Bailey from behind.
Chicago Street Fight: Gates of Agony (Toa Liona & Bishop Kaun) vs. The Learning Tree (Big Bill & Bryan Keith)
We didn’t have to wait for the bell to ring for violence to loom large. Big Bill and Bryan Keith came out first, pulling a table from under the ring and setting it up in the corner. Gates of Agony then made their way out wielding trash cans and barbed wire bats.
Street signs, wet floor signs, parts of the set, traffic cones – it was all on the menu in this Chicago Street Fight. That poor table was broken in half after just a few moments, as was a pool cue – although that one was a victim of Toa Liona shattering it over his own head. Those two big men beat each other all over the ring until Bishop Kaun sneaked up to choke Bill with a line of metal until The Learning Tree member was able to free himself.
Unfortunately, his tag team partner had trouble escaping a trash can that he was put into upside-down by Gates of Agony, eating a devastating dropkick right to the can. Big Bill eventually came to the rescue, then revealed what was in the backpack he wore out to the ring: a literal stack of bricks. He lined up Liona to smash his head between a brick and the ring post, Liona ducked out of the way, leaving Bill to soak up the damage with his hand.
Keith tried evening the odds by smashing a trash can lid across Liona’s dome, but the Samoan Lion absorbed the impact and set Keith up to be steamrolled on the barricade. Keith countered by throwing the trash can lid right into Liona’s face, who was stunned for a second but gathered himself and took out Keith with a cross body off of the barricade, leaving both men out of commission.
The violence just kept escalating from there, with Big Bill neutralizing Liona with a big boot that sent the big man crashing through two tables at ringside. Ultimately, The Learning Tree got the win when Big Bill landed a massive chokeslam for the pin.
A Tribute to Steve “Mongo” McMichael
Rather than have me describe this one, I’ll tell you to go to the AEW YouTube page and watch the tribute from Ric Flair, Tony Schiavone, Dean Malenko and Mongo’s wife, Misty, to the Pro Football Hall of Fame member and former professional wrestler, Steve McMichael.
AEW World Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contenders Match: Sons of Texas (Dustin Rhodes & Sammy Guevara) vs. CRU (Action Andretti and Lio Rush)
No matter the flaunting by CRU or the pre-match crowd engagement by Guevera, there was no questioning just how deadly serious this one was, with a shot at the AEW World Tag Team Championships at Double or Nothing on the line.
The veteran Rhodes started things off for the ROH World Tag Team Champions, the Sons of Texas, with Andretti ready to go in the other corner. Andretti backed Rhodes into the corner on an initial tie up, then mocked the Natural, firing Rhodes up. As Rhodes knocked Andretti to the ground, however, Rush attacked from behind, bringing Guevara into the ring as well. Rush bludgeoned Guevara out of the ring, allowing CRU to get some double-team punches and kicks in on Rhodes.
A few moments later, Rhodes sent Andretti crashing into Rush on the ring apron and took Andretti down with an arm drag, then tagged Guevara in. The Sons of Texas cleared the ring, setting Guevara up to wipe out both members of CRU with a dive to the outside. Guevara then called for Rhodes to take flight himself. Rhodes looked like he might, only to instead taunt CRU and hit a bit of a tranquilo pose.
That apparently triggered CRU, as they went to get chairs from the ringside area. But the Sons of Texas were in hot pursuit. Andretti wiped out Rhodes, however, by whipping him into the ring steps, with Rush and Andretti then double-teaming Guevara. Rhodes made his way back into the ring, where Andretti went to work on his left knee, then tagged in Rush. Rush continued the focus on Rhodes’ lower appendage before tagging Andretti right back in.
Rhodes finally made the tag after a low-bridge on Andretti and a scoop powerslam on Rush. The fresh Guevara squared off with both members of CRU simultaneously, temporarily falling prey to Andretti and Rush until Rhodes barreled through all three men to break up a potential pinfall. Rhodes nailed Rush with a Texas Destroyer then turned right into a superkick by Andretti. That gave Guevara just enough daylight to nail Andretti with a leaping knee to the face and the GTH for the win, earning the ROH World Tag Team Champions an opportunity at the AEW World Tag Team Championships against The Hurt Syndicate at Double or Nothing!
Statlander and Nightingale Come Face-to-Face
Backstage, Kris Statlander was ready to speak to Lexy Nair about last week’s match against Willow Nightingale, and, presumably, the interference by the Death Riders. However, Stat saw Nightingale walking by and called out for Willow to join her. Nightingale wasn’t in much of a mood to talk, though, mockingly asking if Stat was going to tell her how sorry she was again (which Stat said was true), or tell her how she and Yuta used to be best friends but aren’t anymore (which Stat said was also true), with both women talking at and over each other, ending in Statlander telling Nightingale that she knows where to find her.
Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Wheeler Yuta
Yuta tried to get an early advantage by jumping Hobbs as he was posing on the turnbuckle before the bell, but his clubbing blows and slap to the face merely seemed to make the AEW World Trios Champion even more ready for a fight. So, Yuta turned to a tried-and-true method for gaining the upper hand: an eye gouge. Yuta attempted a crossbody on Hobbs, who caught the Death Rider in midair and spiked him to the mat.
On the outside, Hobbs rammed Yuta spine-first into the ring post, then repeatedly slammed him into the ring apron. As both men climbed back into the ring, Yuta tried to slap Hobbs across the chest, but the big man was unfazed, crushing Yuta with a superplex off the top. However, Yuta slipped away when Hobbs tried to manhandle him on the top rope a second time, yanking the Trios Champion down to the mat. Yuta then zeroed in on Hobbs’ right knee with blow after blow and a few wrenching submissions for good measure. A shotgun dropkick to Hobbs’ knee tied up in the ropes sent the member of the Opps crashing to the outside.
With mounting momentum, Yuta climbed the top rope, but Hobbs cut him off with a stunning forearm to the jaw. He went for another superplex, but Yuta fought him off and landed a massive splash. Hobbs kicked out at two, then planted Yuta with a powerslam and again with a crushing lariat. A follow-up spinebuster was all she wrote, with Hobbs scoring the pin.
In classic Death Riders fashion, Marina Shafir appeared and attacked Hobbs’ injured leg. That brought out Willow Nightingale, who took down Shafir and went to town. Yuta lifted Nightingale up by the hair from behind, but Willow smacked Yuta and nearly got him with a gut-wrench powerbomb. Shafir grabbed Yuta at the last second, and the Death Riders pair scampered off. Interestingly, Kris Statlander was spotted at the tunnel, taking it in all in.
